Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 oz onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large clove garlic, finely minced
  • 2 cups ketchup, no salt added
  • 3 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp dark molasses
  • 1 tsp chili powder (add more if you like spicy)
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper (add more if you like spicy)

Directions

Put the oil in a saucepan and place over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and onion and cook for about 5 minutes until they are softened, stir frequently to prevent burning.

Add in the other ingredients and bring to a boil, stir often. Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.

Cool and keep refrigerated and covered in the refrigerator.

Makes about 2 cups – 1/4 cup serving has 130 calories, 45mg sodium
